The demand for “green” jobs in Ireland has surged by an impressive 93%, according to recent research conducted by jobs website Indeed ad reported by The Irish Independent.
However, despite the abundance of vacancies, fewer individuals are actively seeking employment in this sector. Concerns over low pay appear to be a significant deterrent for job seekers, posing challenges for businesses striving to fill crucial positions in sustainability and environmental sectors.
Jack Kennedy, a senior economist at Indeed, highlighted that sustainability has become a top priority across various industries, with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations increasingly integrated into business operations. He noted that the European Union’s recent mandate on non-financial ESG reporting for larger businesses reflects a growing emphasis on sustainability in corporate practices.
Kennedy emphasized the importance of addressing the mismatch between job demand and supply in the green job market. Despite the growing need for professionals in sustainability roles, many individuals are unaware of the available job opportunities or feel unprepared to pursue careers in this field. However, the survey revealed a positive trend, with the majority of workers expressing openness to retraining for sustainability-related roles.
In addition to focusing on preparing new entrants to the workforce, Kennedy stressed the importance of upskilling existing employees to meet the demand for sustainability expertise. This strategic investment, he noted, is crucial not only for meeting the needs of the expanding job market but also for advancing Ireland’s transition to a greener economy.
