The Central Statistics Office (CSO) recently published its Detailed Analysis of Earnings Distribution 2023, providing a detailed look at income distribution across various sectors in Ireland.

The report reveals significant disparities in weekly earnings, offering insights into Ireland’s evolving economic landscape.

Key Highlights:
  • Overall Earnings Distribution:
    • 25.7% of all employments earned less than €450 per week.
    • Only 12.8% earned €1,500 or more weekly, highlighting a pronounced earnings gap.
  • Sector-Specific Trends:
    • In the Information and Communication sector, 22.5% of employees earned over €2,250 weekly, reflecting its high-paying nature.
    • By contrast, 39.7% of employees in Accommodation and Food Services earned less than €300 per week, underscoring challenges in lower-wage industries.
  • Annual Growth in Median Weekly Earnings:
    • Across all economic sectors, there was a 4.2% increase in median weekly earnings from 2022 to 2023.
    • Sectors with standout growth include Professional, Scientific, and Technical Activities (6.7%) and Information and Communication (6.6%), demonstrating strong demand in knowledge-intensive industries.
    • The Transportation and Storage sector saw a more modest increase of 2.7%.
Regional Disparities:

Earnings also varied by location, with median weekly earnings in Dublin being 40% higher than in Donegal, indicating regional economic imbalances.

These findings highlight Ireland’s current earnings landscape, driven by growth in tech and professional services, while sectors like hospitality remain more vulnerable to lower wage thresholds.
