Job Descriptions


The
Renewables Projects section within the ESB Engineering and Major
Projects (EMP) business unit provides project management and engineering
services in support of renewable power generation for ESB and external
clients. Renewable projects include onshore wind, offshore wind, solar
PV and battery storage. Our projects range from major utility scale
offshore wind farms over 1GW to small distributed solar projects or
battery projects.



This
role involves working in partnership with Asset Development to develop
projects as the business case evolves and progress projects based on
risks and opportunities. Wind energy, offshore wind in particular, has
been identified as a key part of ESB’s strategy to increase renewable
generation capacity to 5GW by 2030. Projects are expected to be
developed from a number of sources including development opportunities
and acquisitions. Given the differing requirements, EMP will develop
flexible solutions to meet these requirements and is required to adapt
to the changing environment of renewable project development.



A
Wind Engineer is required to provide technical support to ESB projects,
both domestic and international. We are looking for a highly analytical
individual who is capable of running key processes and analysing large
volumes. Ideally this individual will have energy analysis experience
but at a minimum will be familiar with wind resource assessment and/or
wind forecasting. Excellent communication skills are a key requirement
to help build strong relations with stakeholders, allowing delivery and
communication of results in an efficient manner.


Key Responsibilities 

Responsibilities may cover the items listed below. All the items refer to both Onshore and Offshore wind projects.




  • Wind farm layout design and energy assessment

  • Wind farm technology assessment and procurement

  • Wind farm due diligence and acquisition support

  • The utilisation of key software packages, such as WindPro, WindFarmer, OpenWind, etc.

  • Gathering, validation and analysis of wind data

  • Data monitoring programme planning and management (met mast, LiDAR)

  • Appreciation of environmental modelling of noise and shadow flicker requirements

  • Provide
    energy results and reporting to key stakeholders, ensuring a clear
    understanding of stakeholder requirements and timelines

  • Close coordination with other functions such as Centre of Engineering, Asset Development, Asset Management, and Finance teams

  • Management of external consultants and contractors


Knowledge, Skills and Experience



Essential




  • Minimum of 3-5 years' relevant work experience or a PhD in a relevant topic

  • Strong understanding of wind resource assessment, energy assessment and wind technology

  • Ability to work and share knowledge and competencies within a team structure

  • Proven ability to collaborate and engage with stakeholders

  • Strong analytical and numerical skills

  • Attention to detail with ability to work to tight deadlines whilst maintaining accuracy

  • A pro-active, enthusiastic, and commercially focussed individual

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills particularly Excel and Word

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Flexibility which is important in all aspects of the role, including travel nationally and internationally.

  • A
    passion for numbers and problem-solving. Highly numerate with the
    ability to analyse complex data, collate and present results in a
    concise manner

  • A self-starter with ability to work on own initiative

  • A flexible approach to task management, whilst working with minimal direction


Desirable




  • Onshore or offshore wind experience, preferably both

  • Experience with wind design and software such as WindPro/Windfarmer

  • Experience in energy assessment based on operational data

  • Experience in noise and shadow flicker assessments

  • Experience with Excel Macros and coding ability

  • Experience using GIS software

  • Due diligence experience

  • Management of contractors and consultants

  • A good understanding of contracts, including management of same

  • Working knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental Standards and procedure


Qualifications



Essential




  • Level 8 qualification in Engineering/  Physical Science / Meteorology or equivalent work experience required.


Desirable




  • Masters in Engineering/Physical Science or related discipline.

  • Chartered Engineer status with a recognised engineering institution or demonstrate evidence of progression towards same.

The
successful candidate may combine working from home within the Republic
of Ireland, with attendance at base (Engineering & Major Projects,
Dublin Airport) for in-person collaboration, the frequency of which is
agreed with the manager and may change as we learn about hybrid
working.]



This
role will also involve extensive travel throughout the island of
Ireland, visiting sites and potential contractors. Travel to the UK may
also be a feature of this role.
