The Automation & Controls Engineer will be a key part of the manufacturing process and is responsible for technical leadership of medical device manufacturing systems, products and cost improvements – with an emphasis on vision systems, software and database effectiveness and consistency. They will provide engineering support to site systems and process equipment to resolve quality and technical issues using appropriate troubleshooting techniques to meet site safety, quality, delivery and cost goals with continuous improvement integrated into daily activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Development of machine control systems including motion controllers and high speed device integration as part of a highly automated, high volume 24/7 validated production environment
  • Ensure manufacturing equipment consistently and sustainably meets/exceeds Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as yield, throughput and productivity.
  • Provide technical core competency support, including training to operations and maintenance personnel on an as-needed basis, including possible off-hours, remote and onsite coverage rotation.
  • Provide line support to resolve quality and technical issues using appropriate troubleshooting techniques.
  • Participate in cross functional teams to manage the introduction of equipment or processes, provide operational support to ensure plant goals are met.
  • Analyse trends to identify improvements and optimization of automated manufacturing process.
  • Implement systems to improve monitoring and reporting of daily, weekly and monthly KPIs.
  • Develop relevant work instructions and SOPs.
  • Writing/executing equipment test scripts and protocols.
  • Drive a right first-time culture, identify and eliminate repetitious automated machine failures.
  • Present, where appropriate, technical data to internal/external audit and inspection groups.
  • Fault-find complex automation equipment and improve fault diagnosis skills within engineering.
  • Encourage and foster teamwork within site support functions, coach and mentor team to build capability

Key Requirements:

  • Level 8 Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent  
  • Min 3 to 5 Years relevant experience in a highly automated, regulated medical device/pharmaceutical environment
  • Prior experience with new process and equipment introductions.
  • Additional knowledge of Servo Motion Control, Laser systems, vision systems, robotics, data analytics and RFID systems would be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma and other GMP tools. E.g. A3 processes, DMAIC, Pareto, Fishbone, 5 Whys Analysis etc.
  • Experience with Electrical/mechanical/pneumatic systems
  • Good record-keeping, communication and reporting skills
  • Accustomed to working in a validated environment with strong discipline regarding change control.
  • Strong Leadership abilities, with a mentoring approach to team building, training and project leadership

Level 8 degree , Bachelors Degree in Engineering , Bachelor's degree in computer science , Post graduate degree in Computer Science
