Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €2.7bn, 14,664km national gas network,
which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the
world.Over 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and
reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs. The gas
network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of
Ireland’s total energy, including 40% of all heating and almost 50% of the country’s electricity
generation.By working to replace natural gas with renewable gases, such as biomethane and green
hydrogen, and complementing intermittent renewable electricity, Gas Networks Ireland is
supporting Ireland’s journey to a cleaner energy future.

 

The Role:

The Health and Safety team within Gas Networks Ireland provides day to day support, advice, measurement and assurance to the Gas Networks Ireland business covering a diverse range of gas and non-gas related activities, including capital and operational projects and programmes. The HSQ team is responsible for the management of the ISO45001 element of our Integrated Management System. Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, the Safety Systems Engineer will be responsible for assisting in the delivery of the Health and Safety elements of the overall Integrated Management System (IMS) and monitoring Gas Networks Ireland and its contractors’ compliance against organisational and legal requirements. The successful candidate will, in conjunction with other Safety Team members, act as the central point of contract for day to day support and provision of Health and Safety information to Gas Networks Ireland staff and stakeholders.. They will also assist with development and rollout of Gas Networks Ireland Health and Safety initiatives as required and assist the Health and Safety Manager in doing so. The role requires a proactive approach to Health and Safety, encouraging and coaching the wider organisation whilst promoting a positive safety culture. The role requires oversight of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man regions and as such requires periodic travel. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Support the Health and Safety Manager in the creation, development, implementation
and communication of Gas Networks Ireland wide health and safety strategy, policy and
procedures, incorporating legislative requirements, industry best practice and other
requirements related to the GNI Integrated Management Systems.
• Provide support to management on Health and Safety policy and strategy and ensure
monitoring and reporting on overall compliance to these standards by the rest of the GNI
business including Bio-Gas, Hydrogen and CNG projects.

• Contribute to the annual risk-based network health and safety audit and inspection
strategy, covering all GNI, GNI (UK) Ltd and GNI (IOM) Ltd operational and construction
activities and responsibilities.
• Ensure that statutory reporting of accidents, incidents and ill health is undertaken in
accordance with current legislation and procedures in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Isle of
Man and Scotland.
• Escalate risks and issues to the Health and Safety Manager as appropriate.
• Support the delivery of the GNI risk assessment program on an annual basis. Ensure all
risks are managed and escalated where appropriate.
• Support GNI construction teams in safe delivery of CAPEX (Capital) projects across the
network, interface with contractor H&S teams to ensure compliance with relevant
legislation and regulations.
• Support Health and Safety requirements of GNI procurement processes.
• Support the implementation of contractual financial adjustments where required.
• Support GNI operations teams in safe delivery of OPEX (Operations) programs across
the network, interface with contractor H&S teams to ensure compliance with relevant
legislation and regulations.
• Work with GNI departments and stakeholders as appropriate.
• Support the DSE assessment program for GNI personnel.
• Support any initiatives that may come up from time to time.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

• Relevant third level qualification in engineering (or relevant discipline) and/ or Health and
Safety is required (Diploma, Degree)
• A minimum of five years post-graduate experience in a professional engineering/ safety
environment, minimum of 3 of which should be in a professional safety role.
• Formal, recognised professional health and safety qualification (e.g. FETAC/IOSH H&S
diploma, BSc etc.)
• Detailed knowledge of relevant safety legislation and ability to interpret and translate such
information into business policy and procedures.
• Working knowledge of HSE management systems, aspects and controls.
• A persuasive influencer and negotiator.
• Self-confidence, discipline and a commercial approach to establish credibility at all levels
in the business up to senior management level.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully influence key internal and external stakeholders and
identify external issues which will impact business performance.
• Proven ability to act as an advocate for the development and implementation of change.
• Experience in developing and maintaining effective partnerships with key stakeholders.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Very strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proven ability to work proactively within a team.
